The Background Check Process

When it comes to childcare, families naturally want to ensure their little ones are in good hands. That's why we prioritize safety by including background checks as a key step in screening our Babysitters and Nannies. At Upwards, we are committed to upholding high standards of care, so we ask all our childcare providers to undergo a thorough background check as part of our account verification process.

Background-checked providers earn their safety badge, which is displayed next to their profile photo and on the provider's listing page. Upwards is unable to share specific details from an individual's background check. However, we encourage families to select care providers with the Upwards safety badge. Families are also welcome and encouraged to conduct additional background checks at their discretion.


What service do we use?

We have teamed up with Checkr (https://checkr.com/), a trusted third-party consumer reporting agency (CRA) service specializing in background checks. 


What areas are being checked?

We initiate a seven-year lookback that searches for the following information:

• National Criminal Search

• Address History

• SSN Check

• Sex Offender Search

• Global Watchlist Search


How does Upwards use background checks?

We manually review every candidate whose history reveals information that may disqualify them from providing care. If the results of the background check confirm that a prospective provider does not meet our safety standards, the individual is immediately removed and banned from our platform. We look at a variety of charges when determining eligibility for our platform. Any of the following criminal convictions will disqualify a prospective provider from joining the platform and will result in a current provider's immediate termination from the platform, including:

• Criminal Intent
• Statutory Charges
• Security Charges
• Sexual Charges
• Theft & Property
• Address History
• Drugs & Alcohol
• SSN Check
• Vehicles & Traffic 
• Fraud & Deception
• Sex Offender Search
• Global Watchlist Search
• Violence & Homicide



Why should I complete the background check?

You don’t need to get a background check right away.  However, to communicate with families and secure jobs through Upwards, completing the background check is necessary.


Providers who have undergone this check enjoy the following benefits:

• Earn your Safety badge: Your account and listing will be updated to indicate that you have completed a background check. This will list your profile as a top provider in your area!

• Visible on App and Website: Background-checked Providers appear on the Upwards app and the Upwards website when families search for childcare.

• Communicate Directly with Families: Interact directly with families and job opportunities through the app.

• Match with Corporate Clients: We partner with businesses to fulfill their childcare needs. We give priority to Providers who have undergone background checks during our search!
